App Subscriptions: Things to Know

In June 2019, we migrated all ACTIVE app_subscriptions over to pro_subscriptions.

The complete list of changes that were made can be found here:

  • Migration Specs
  • List of subscriptions that were migrated

There are a few things that are helpful to know:

  • In the past, we had app_subscriptions for "Premium" upgrades that were specific to an app instance and pro_subscriptions for "Pro" and "Business" upgrades that were account-wide.
  • When we eliminated instance-specific upgrades, we introduced levels for pro_subscriptions and stopped using app_subscriptions. Everything was now a pro_subscription with a level of premium (Starter), pro (Pro), or enterprise (Business) and an app_type associated with the subscription.
  • As of June 2019, we still had nearly 3,000 active app subscriptions. Many of our billing tools never worked for app subscriptions. Examples: update payment details, price change, renewal discounts, etc.
  • That's why we decided to migrate all app subscriptions that were still active.
  • We did NOT migrate inactive app subscriptions.
  • IMPORTANT: We used the created_at date of the original app subscription for the newly created pro_subscription. This is causing dashboards that show both app and pro subscriptions to have inflated numbers leading up to June 2019. You can see this here:

The "Total" graph should actually be Total - App Subscriptions to be an accurate reflection of total # of upgrades active at the time.
